A Salute to F. Scott Fitzgerald
September 22, 2006 - September 24, 2006
F. Scott Fitzgerald was the image-maker of the Jazz Age, setting the tone, fashion and style of this era in America, along with his wife, Zelda. Fitzgerald rose to fame after the acclaimed success of his great literary work, The Great Gatsby.
In 1935, Fitzgerald came to The Grove Park Inn for rest and relaxation while Zelda recouped in a mental hospital in Baltimore. That autumn, he wrote "The Crack-Up" for Esquire magazine, a deeply personal confessional of his tormenting battles with alcohol and depression.
The summer of 1936, he brought Zelda to Asheville's Highland Hospital, and to be near her he once again occupied rooms 441 and 443 here at The Grove Park Inn. Each year we salute F. Scott Fitzgerald, his accomplishments and his association with The Grove Park Inn on the weekend of the anniversary of his birth, September 24th.
For your entertainment and convenience "F. Scott Fitzgerald: Winter Dreams", an exceptional documentary, will run continuously on Channel 11 throughout the weekend. Please take a few moments and enjoy this illuminating account of this great authors eccentric life.
